Republican Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke breezed to a third term, while Democrats took seven of the nine city council seats in Tuesday’s city election.
Winnecke won more than 80 percent of the vote, easily defeating Independent Steven Ary and Libertarian Bart Gadau.
Democrats did not nominate a candidate for mayor, but they won five of the six city council ward seats and two of the three at-large seats.
Democratic chair Edie Hardcastle said despite the party’s upcoming 7-to-2 majority on the council, she believes the Democrats will work with the Republican mayor.
The top vote getters for the 3 city council at-large seats were Republican Ron Beane, Democratic incumbent Jonathan Weaver, and Democrat Kaitlin Moore Morely.
Democrats Ben Trockman, Missy Mosby, Zac Heronimus, Alex Burton and Jim Brinkmeyer won city council ward seats. Incumbent Republican Justin Elpers won re-election in the 5th Ward.
Incumbent Democrat Laura Brown Windurst was unopposed in the city clerk race.
