A young man is dead and another is seriously injured after a crash involving a moped on Highway 41.

Indiana State Police say it happened at about 9:45 Thursday night in Knox County.

The ISP says an SUV driven by Kayla Jones of Bicknell had just entered northbound 41 from Willow Street and crashed into the rear of the moped driven by 22-year-old Robert Vaquero of Huntingburg.

The ISP says a passenger on the scooter, 21-year-old Skylar Newton of Washington, died at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police say Vaquero was initially taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, but was later airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville with serious injuries.

Vaquero was also not wearing a helmet. Jones wasn’t injured.

She told police she didn’t see the moped until just before the crash.

Police said the rear taillight of the scooter wasn’t working at the time of the crash.
