U.S. Representative Dr. Larry Bucshon faced a tough crowd at Monday night’s town hall in Evansville. Guns and President Donald Trump galvanized the audience.
Bucshon said he hasn’t changed his mind substantially about gun control.
He said he supports background checks but he questioned the efficacy and constitutionality of an assault weapons ban.
"We banned assault weapons from 94 to 2006. [It] didn’t change anything," he said. Those comments prompted jeers from some in the audience.
A lot of the discussion was laser-focused on Trump. Bucshon was asked why he supports the president.
"The reality is I don’t support him on everything," he said. "But if you look at his agenda, it’s a right-of-center, conservative agenda, and that’s what I support as a Congressman.”
He said tariffs were one area of disagreement. The congressman said he supports free trade.
Bucshon was asked about impeachment, and under what circumstances he would consider it. He said there were none given what we currently know.
"You can’t impeach presidents because you don’t like them," he said to some applause.
Buschon was also asked about how he’ll justify his “involvement in this bleak period of history” to his grandchildren, along with the Congressman’s support for the president.
He rejected the premise, saying we live in a "time of prosperity."
Bucshon also fielded questions about the environment, tax cuts, LGBTQ rights, election security, and the national debt.
