A young child has died after being left in a car on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana.
County Coroner Steve Lockyear has identified the toddler as three-year-old Oliver Dill.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says Dill's father found the child unresponsive in the car and went to the university’s Children’s Learning Center looking for medical attention.
Deputies were called around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. The child was dead when they arrived. The sheriff's office says the child was left in the car for several hours.
Mjr. Jason Ashworth said detectives are investigating. "We’re still very early in the investigation, determining who, and when, and timelines, and things of that nature," he said.
An autopsy was done Tuesday night, but the county coroner hasn't named a cause of death and says the investigation is ongoing.
In a letter to the USI community, President Ronald Rochon gave his condolences to the child’s family.
"This is a loss no parent should bear. If you have a child in your life, please hug them tight and remember that counseling services are available if you need them," he wrote.
He added that the children’s center wouldn’t open Wednesday. It could remain closed through the end of the week.
Last year, 52 children died in cars from excessive heat in the United States, according to the National Safety Council. Tuesday's temperature reached a high of 92 degrees, but children are at-risk even in more mild weather.
