Evansville Chosen For Emissions Study

Evansville is one of 13 Indiana communities chosen by IU to track greenhouse gas emissions.

The City of Evansville says it will collect information about community-wide and local government emissions as part of Indiana University’s first Resilience Cohort.

A news release says the findings will be used to help understand Evansville’s current emissions profile and to help create an action plan to reduce emissions, increase energy and improve air quality.

The release says a greenhouse gas inventory is a fundamental first step for Hoosier cities, towns, and counties committed to battling climate changes.

It notes communities in Indiana are already seeing heavier rainfall in spring and winter, more river and flash flood events, and more freeze-thaw events wreaking havoc on transportation infrastructure -- and create potholes.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says he hopes the results of the inventories will help officials become “better environmental stewards” and put the city on a path towards “environmental sustainability.”

The City of Evansville anticipates the inventories will be done by the completion of the Resilience Cohort, September 15.
