You’ll soon notice some new street signs along Walnut Street in downtown Evansville. A portion of the road will be named Bob Jones Way after city council voted unanimously for the change.
It’s the ending of a story that began a couple weeks ago, when Evansville mayor Lloyd Winnecke announced he would ask city council to rename the road after Old National Bank’s recently retired CEO.
The council voted 8-0 Monday in favor of the change. Councilman John Hayden was absent.
City councilwoman Connie Robinson was the resolution's first sponsor. "Bob’s been an advisor not only to political figures, but I admire him for his commitment to minority companies and minority individuals, inclusiveness, and diversity with Old National Bank," she said at the meeting. The renamed road lies in her ward.
City council also voted Monday to table an ordinance that would restrict where unsolicited advertisements could be placed on someone’s property. The proposal came after some councilmembers received complaints from residents about advertising circulars and leaflets from local businesses left on yards and driveways.
Councilmembers generally agreed that there was no need to rush adding a new section to the city code and will give the neighborhood associations a chance to comment on the ordinance.
The issue will go before council again June 10.
