EVPL To Weed Inventory

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library is preparing to “weed” its collection.

In a news release, the EVPL says Library Systems & Services performed a comprehensive evaluation of the library system’s inventory last year.

The consultant recommended removing items from the system based on publishing date, frequency of circulation, community interest, and availability of newer or more valid materials.

The EVPL says a team made up of library personnel will conduct weeding of inventory at Red Bank Library this month.

The project is estimated to take six days. Once finished, an assessment will be done before continuing the weeding at the other seven EVPL locations.

The library says items about local history, last copies, classics and more will be left in the system.

Officials say replacement items will be ordered in the same title, later edition of the same title, or by better titles on the same subject for items that are of use, but in poor quality.

Removed items will be given to the EVPL Foundation for future book sales.

Items that are determined to be too damaged for sale will be recycled, which the EVPL says has been done for years.
