EWSU Changing Disinfectant In Drinking Water

You may notice a change in your tap water.

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility says it’s temporarily changing the disinfectant used in the water treatment process.

The utility tweeted that it’s using free chlorine rather than the usual disinfectant, chloramine, through June 24th.

Free chlorine is a slightly stronger disinfectant and it’s used to remove more resistant bacteria and viruses that may be found in the water distribution system.

The utility says some customers may notice a slight change in the taste or odor of their tap water. Free chlorine may have more of a chemical odor, slightly like that of swimming pool water.

The utility says both chlorine and chloramine are safe but precautions should be taken to remove them during the kidney dialysis process, in the preparation of water for fish tanks and ponds, and for businesses requiring highly processed water.

It’s the first of two temporary switchovers, with the second one planned in August.
