Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb was in New Harmony Friday afternoon to present state transportation grants to local elected officials.
The money comes from a matching grant program through the Indiana Department of Transportation, called Community Crossings.
The town of New Harmony received just under 150 thousand dollars to pave most of its streets. Town Council President Alvin Blaylock says much of that work would’ve been impossible without the state funding.
"We could pay," Blaylock says, "but we would only do about 25 percent of what we’re being able to do here because of the money the town has."
Blaylock says the project will help the town’s tourism scene.
Holcomb calls the grants a win-win for Indiana and its communities. "The state of Indiana’s success is tethered to each local community," Holcomb says, "and when are local cities and towns, no matter how small or large, if they’re doing well, then the state’s going to do well."
Indiana will administer more than $115 million through the grant program this year.
