The state of Indiana has named Vanderburgh County a Broadband Ready Community.
The Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) certifies a community as broadband ready if it puts certain policies in place to encourage broadband investment.
These include requiring decisions on permits to be issued within 10 days and making sure that inspections of broadband projects take place quickly.
Vanderburgh County Commissioners also voted recently to remove the personal property tax on new broadband infrastructure investments.
Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave has largely led the push to expand broadband. She told fellow commissioners at a meeting Tuesday afternoon that this recognition is only one of many steps.
"We’ve already met with AT&T and WOW and found some hurdles to overcome there," she said. "There’s some grant opportunities...This’ll be more work to come, but I’m super happy to say that we got our broadband designation."
According to the IEDC website, Vanderburgh County is among nineteen communities statewide to receive the designation.
