A few blocks of Riverside Drive in downtown Evansville will be shut down next month to allow crews to repair a major water transmission line.
Riverside Drive will be shut down between Shawnee Drive and Cherry Street for seven to 10 days starting April 2 as crews replace three sections of the line.
Evansville Water Superintendent Patrick Keepes says the 36-inch-diameter line serves about half of the city’s population.
"We’re being very aggressive in doing these repairs," Keepes says. "It’s not a line we can afford and have break on us. We want to get ahead of it before anything happens to this line."
There will be a marked detour around the closed roads, but the city’s urging drivers to avoid the area entirely. The city’s asking drivers instead to take alternative routes downtown like the Lloyd Expressway.
