Evansville City Councilman Justin Elpers has stepped down from his position as a teacher in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation.
Elpers says he’s taken a job in sales at Heritage Petroleum.
"Last three or four years, I’ve been looking for some opportunities within education and outside of education," he says. "I’ve gotten close in those interviews."
He says he was interviewed for this new job in early January. "The interviews went well, and they wanted me to come aboard so I accepted and here I am," he says.
The councilman taught social studies at Harrison High School until he resigned Friday.
News of the resignation was first reported by the Courier and Press.
Elpers says demand is high for social studies teachers. He expects his old classroom to be filled in a few weeks.
