Primary Challenger Comes Forward At Last Hour In Evansville Mayor Race

Connie Whitman is running in challening incumbent mayor Lloyd Winnecke in the Republican primary. Whitman says she decided to run Friday morning after she read in the Courier and Press that no one had entered the race to challenge the mayor.

"I just don't believe in uncontested races," she says. "I said last time that if things didn't change that I might run for mayor, and they haven't changed, or not for the better at least."

She filed her paperwork about an hour before the noon deadline. This is her first time running for office.

One of her main policy priorities is the creation of a job bank that would provide jobs paying $10 per hour to people who may not be able to find work otherwise because of criminal convictions. She also wants to decrease spending by getting rid of government workers and cutting employee pay.

Winnecke officially launched his campaign for a third term in early January.
