St. Theresa Demolition Near; Habitat Homes Planned

File Photo

The former St. Theresa School and church will soon be demolished to make way for Habitat homes and a new Catholic facility.

The property at Stringtown Road and Herndon Drive in Evansville has sat vacant since the Catholic Diocese closed the school and church, and merged it with Good Shepherd in 2015.

The diocese says Catholic Charities and Habitat for Humanity entered into an agreement for subdividing the property, making way for 14 single-family homes to be built in a neighborhood called St. Theresa Place.

The former rectory will be converted into a permanent home for Catholic Charities.

Demolition of the remaining buildings – including the red brick school and church that date back 70 years -- is set to begin next week.

The diocese says repairing the buildings would have been too costly – topping $1.4 million.

The diocese says the St. Theresa property will serve as “one of Evansville’s true beacons of hope and a model for inter-agency collaboration.”
