With two toddlers in tow, Evansville city councilman Jonathan Weaver launched his campaign for re-election Monday morning. This would be the at-large Democrat’s third term on city council.

Weaver said he wants to continue the city’s work to combat blight and make housing more affordable.

Weaver was earlier considering a run for mayor, but he announced last week he would run for city council instead. He said mayoral duties would take him away from his family, especially his two-year old son.

There were other factors, too.

"It came down to the facts of the matter. Mayor Winnecke has set the bar high. There are a lot of great things happening in the city. He’s well-liked. He has a lot of money. Those were the fact," he said. "I think it’s attainable, just not in 2019. We’ll look at 2023 and see how the stars are aligned, and we'll go from there."

Weaver is the third Democrat to file for a shot at one of the three at-large seats. The election office says Gina Robinson Ungar will file next week, which will trigger a primary race.
