The Vanderburgh County Building Commissioner teared up a bit during his first official campaign speech. Ron Beane addressed supporters after he filed to run Thursday afternoon for an at-large seat on the Evansville City Council.
"I scheduled it at 3:30 today so no one would risk getting a parking ticket. That way I could speak as long as I wanted," Beane said, kicking off his speech with a joke.
When asked about his agenda, the Republican called himself a "financial conservative."
"I would see no new taxes," he added. "Good roads is something that everybody wants. But other than that, I don’t have a passion project."
Beane said he has brought ordinances before council as building commissioner so he is familiar with its problem-solving process.
Several other Republican city council hopefuls came to his filing. Beane said the party is running a group of candidates with a good mix of experiences.
Beane is one of four candidates who’ve filed to run for the council’s three at large seats. The others are fellow Republican Alex Schmitt and Democrats Ed Bassemier and Kaitlin Moore Morley.
At least two others plan to file: Republican Michelle Mercer and Democrat Jonathan Weaver, both incumbents.
