Evansville city councilman Jonathan Weaver announced today Tuesday he’s running for re-election, ending any talk that the Democrat might enter the race for mayor.

Weaver, who holds an at-large seat, said he plans to file for re-election early next week. It would be his third term on city council.

In his announcement, Weaver said he was considering a challenge against Lloyd Winnecke as the Republican mayor seeks re-election.

But Weaver said he’s happy with his life now and that the time commitment of being mayor would take him away from his family, including his young son.

The Vanderburgh County Election Office says no one else has scheduled to run in the mayor’s race as of Tuesday afternoon.

The filing deadline is Feb 8.
