The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority has announced a new program to help homeowners who have fallen behind on their mortgage.

Eligible homeowners can receive up to $30,000 if they have missed payments on their mortgage for job-related reasons like a layoff or a cutback on hours.

The Community Action Program of Evansville (CAPE)  is one of three local organizations administering the program.

Tehiji Crenshaw is CAPE’s housing program director. She said CAPE predicts to help around 120 households. For those households and those individuals, not only can we help prevent the cycle of homelessness," she said, "it helps keep the property base going in that area so that libraries and schools and roads can be taken care of."

The money comes from the Indiana Hardest Hit Funds, which the U.S. Treasury Department gave to Indiana during the Great Recession. Around three million dollars is available statewide on a first-come, first-served basis.

CAPE is hosting an event December 15 at 10 a.m. to help homeowners through the application process.

You can call CAPE at 812.492.3943 for more information and to register for the event. You can also register online here
