A two-year-old girl is recovering after shooting herself in the chest over the weekend, and the Evansville Police Department (EPD) wants to speak with the woman who lives in the room where the gun was stored.
Police believe Charico Carter lives in the bedroom where the toddler found the .45-caliber handgun.
EPD spokesman Sgt. Jason Cullum said Carter was in the apartment at the time of the shooting but left before police arrived.
"Based on the statement we received from one of the witnesses," he said, "she was concerned about being arrested on a warrant."
Cullum said Carter has two outstanding misdemeanor warrants
"At this point, the investigation into the injury of that young child is more important to us than serving two misdemeanor warrants," Cullum said.
Cullum said Carter is not a suspect in the shooting but police want to speak with her as part of their investigation.
On Saturday night, police and medical crews responded to a shooting in the Savannah Gardens apartment complex.
Cullum said police were initially told the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted. He added that police have not found any information that would contradict those claims.
