In a report to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), CSX said buckled track led to the June 17 train derailment south of Princeton.
Federal law requires railroad companies to file an accident report after certain incidents.
An FRA spokesperson said tracks can warp quickly at high temperatures. CSX said it was 83 degrees at the time of the incident.
An FRA investigation is active and ongoing.
According to CSX, the incident caused more than $1.8 million in damage to equipment and the track. That number doesn’t include damage to civilian property.
CSX said in the report more than 20 cars derailed, eight of which were carrying hazardous materials. Two cars let out almost 60,000 gallons of liquid propane into the air after several explosions.
There were no injuries or fatalities.
