Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke unveiled more detailed plans for replacing Lloyd Pool. The proposed aquatics center will have two indoor pools, one for recreation and another 50 meter pool for competitive swimming and diving.
The new pool will be built in Garvin Park next to Bosse Field, but it doesn’t yet have a name.
"It’s not gonna be the Winnecke Aquatics Center," he joked. Winnecke said the city will unveil the corporation with naming rights Friday morning.
The pool is scheduled to be completed in August 2020, which Winnecke notes is just after the Olympics, perhaps in a nod to Evansville’s most famous Olympian. "I think having Lilly King enjoy the success that she had in the last Olympics really provided a greater motivation to our administration and to our aquatics task force to come up with a solution that really meets the broader needs of the community," he said.
Winnecke said the pool already at Garvin Park will no longer be there.
