EVPL doing away with overdue fines

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library is dropping overdue fines.

The library system’s board of trustees approved the new policy, effective September 1st.

In a news release, the EVPL said fines can create a barrier to service, especially for young people and residents with financial hardships.

Officials say the policy change will NOT change due dates.

Patrons will receive an overdue notice about 2 days after the due date and again 14 days later.

If an item is not returned within 30 days, you’ll be charged the cost to replace the item.

Materials received through inter-library loans may still be subject to overdue fines from the lending library.

The EVPL will continue to charge fees for copying, printing, and other services.

The library system says it’s “excited” about the new policy and happy to make the shift away from overdue fines.
