UE To Dedicate Peace Bell

U.S. Park Service

The Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, England has cast some of the world’s most famous bells. Their impressive portfolio includes the bells at Big Ben, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, and the bells at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

The foundry closed last year, but one of its final creations will soon find a home at UE.

The Interfaith Peace Bell weighs a whopping three-hundred twenty-two pounds. The words “yearn for peace” are inscribed on one side of the bell. The words “work for peace” appear on the other.

Univesity Chaplain Tammy Gieselman said in a press release that the bell “will symbolize harmony and good will at UE.”

Students and faculty at UE’s Harlaxton College in England held a casting ceremony in February of last year, and leaders of London’s Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities consecrated the bell a few days later.

A public dedication will take place at the university Aug. 9 at 3 p.m.
