Man faces murder charge in 2017 shooting

An Evansville man now faces a murder charge after the man he’s accused of shooting died ten months after the incident.

22-year-old Travis Phelps is accused of shooting Austin Smith on Evansville’s West Side on August 31st of last year.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office announced Smith’s death on Friday.

Police said the shooting began as a domestic dispute between Phelps and his girlfriend.

She left in a car driven by Smith.

Witnesses said Phelps fired several shots at the car as it drove away, wounding Smith.
