Ice and snow on the way

Forecasters say up to 3 inches of snow and a quarter-inch of ice is possible across the Tri-State Thursday night and Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING in effect from 9:00 tonight (Thur) until 9:00 Friday night for southwest Indiana, southeast Illinois, and western Kentucky.

Forecasters are calling for “heavy mixed precipitation” as rain changes to freezing rain, sleet, and snow overnight.

The weather service is predicting snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches on top of a layer of ice.

Forecasters are warning of isolated to scattered power outages and tree damage due to ice accumulation.

They say travel will become dangerous, including during the morning commute on Friday.

The weather service says wind gusts could reduce visibility at times and increase the hazard to power lines and tree branches.

Some school systems have already canceled classes for Friday.
