The conductor of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra is planning to put down his baton.
Conductor and Music Director Alfred Savia will celebrate his 30th season with the EPO this year.
A news release from the Philharmonic says Savia has extended his contract though the 2019-2020 season, and will step down after that.
The 64-year-old conductor says in the release that guest conductors will lead the orchestra in his final season.
Those guest conductors will be candidates for the music director position.
Savia says he agreed to stay on through 2020 because he’s “keenly aware of the challenge of finding the right person to become the EPO’s music director.”
Orchestra Executive Director Gary Wagner said it’s been a pleasure working with Savia, who he called a “tremendous asset” to the EPO and the Tri-State.
