Owensboro team to be called Thoroughbreds

NAPB

A name has been chosen for Owensboro’s new minor league basketball team.

After a three-week naming contest that saw hundreds of suggestions, the winning name for the new franchise is the Kentucky Thoroughbreds.

In a news release, the North American Premier Basketball League says Thoroughbreds was the clear front-runner in the naming contest.

The contest winner will be drawn October 21st, when General Manager and Head Coach Brandon Lesovsky will draw at random from everyone who suggested the name.

The colors of the team will be blue and yellow and the mascot will be taken from a second contest of local designers who will submit their nominations through the team’s website.

The new league includes teams in Kansas City, Seattle, Akron OH, Albany NY, and Rochester NY.

The inaugural season is set for 2018.

The team will play in the Owensboro Sportscenter, where the owner of the former Evansville IceMen had planned to move the team.

That plan never materialized and the team landed in Jacksonville, Florida.
