Holcomb: state taking over delayed I-69 section

John Gibson

Governor Eric Holcomb says the state is taking control of the I-69 extension between Bloomington and Martinsville.

Governor Holcomb addressed both the delay in Section 5 construction and the planned I-69 bridge between Evansville and western Kentucky during a luncheon meeting with Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and local business leaders.

After the luncheon, Holcomb told reporters the state of Indiana is negotiating with the bond holders of the project between Bloomington and Martinsville…

“The state is in negotiations to take Section 5 on I-69 back under our management.”

Holcomb said work will continue on the Bloomington to Martinsville segment during the negotiations…

“We have made it crystal clear that finishing I-69 Section 5 and finishing the complete I-69 is a top priority of my administration.”

The governor’s remarks followed word that the completion date for Section 5 has been pushed to August 31st 2018 – nearly two years behind schedule.

Meantime, Holcomb said work on an environmental study continues for the planned I-69 bridge linking Evansville and Henderson, KY…

“We’re where we need to be at this moment, we’ll get that study done, and then take the next step.
