Police: watch out for phony pavers

Authorities in Vanderburgh and Gibson Counties are warning residents to beware of asphalt scammers.

Authorities say the fraudulent pavers have been going door-to-door trying to pass themselves off as legitimate contractors, offering services at a substantial or unrealistic discount.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding says in a news release that few reputable contractors sell their services door-to-door.

He says you should be skeptical of an offer if the contractor claims to have "left over" material from a nearby job, proposes an unrealistic timetable such as paving a driveway in one afternoon, or can’t provide any references, or isn’t listed with the Better Business Bureau or on file with the Vanderburgh County Building Commission.

Wedding says don't commit to a job unless you’re given a formal bid.

Project bids should be in writing and clearly spell out what work is to be performed.

Indiana law requires written home improvement contracts for jobs exceeding $150.

If you’ve been a victim of home improvement fraud or theft, you’re urged to call 911.
