Community honored at 2017 IN AP awards

During ceremonies Saturday in Indianapolis, WNIN-FM received eight awards in the annual Indiana Associated Press news contest. In Indiana, WNIN competes in the large market division, which also includes entries from Indianapolis, Chicago, Louisville, Ft. Wayne and South Bend.

WNIN was honored with awards in several categories for specific stories and programs, such as the Dubois County avian flu outbreak and ¿Qué Pasa Midwest? The community's public radio organization also received recognition for John Gibson in the Best Reporter category and for overall excellence.

Here is a list:

1st place- We swept the long-form newscast category, winning first and second places for a newscast in July and for our day-after election coverage.

​1st place- WNIN intern and IU student Abigail Gipson won first place in the student reporter category.

2nd place- Outstanding News Operation- WNIN staff

Judge's comments: "Quality work , well-produced seems to be a hallmark at this station. 

2nd place- Best Radio Reporter- John Gibson

Judge's comments: "Obviously a seasoned journalist who has embraced the importance of incorporating online storytelling. His stories flow and take you 'there', which is exactly what radio storytelling is supposed to do."

2nd place- Best News Series-  Paola Marizan for ¿Qué Pasa Midwest? (QPM is the bilingual WNIN program chosen for national development in 2017 through a grant from the Public Radio Exchange and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Judge's comments: "A unique series topic. I appreciated the reporter's passion for the topic and the production value was great."

2nd place- Continuing Coverage- Samantha Horton/Steve Burger for our coverage of the Dubois County avian flu outbreak in January of 2016. 

Judge's comments: "Well executed and exhaustive study of how one county dealt with a serious livestock disease outbreak and the ramifications for the regional economy. "

2nd place- Best Public Affairs Program- Samantha Horton/Steve Burger for our coverage of the New Harmony Conversations local initiative to educate residents about end of life medical care planning.
