NAACP head speaks at USI

John Gibson

The head of one of the most prominent civil rights groups in the nation visited Evansville to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks delivered the keynote address during the MLK Memorial Luncheon at the University of Southern Indiana.

Speaking to reporters before his speech, Brooks said it’s important to teach college students about what King did and how they can follow in his footsteps.

He said King started his "call to the ministry" when he was a student.

Brooks says students can make a difference, as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take the oath of office. He points out that the Constitution doesn't start with "I, the president," but with "We the people."

Brooks also says the NAACP hopes to work with Trump, but if he doesn't follow the Constitution the organization will be "in his face" instead of "by his side."

Brooks cites what he calls “voter suppression” in the form of voter ID laws as an issue the NAACP will fight.
