First snow closes schools, snarls traffic

Samantha Horton

The first snow of the season closed schools and led to numerous traffic crashes in the Evansville area.

Light snow moved into the Tri-State early Wednesday with temperatures well below freezing, so everything that fell stuck to area roads and bridges – except for some that were pre-treated on Tuesday.

Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullum says officers responded to at least two dozen accidents during the morning drive.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Todd Ringle reported at least a dozen crashes.

The snow and resulting crashes slowed traffic on major arteries like the Lloyd Expressway, Highway 41, I-64, and the Audubon Parkway.

City, county, and state crews worked to clear the snow as it fell.

1-to-2 inches of snow was measured in the Evansville area with higher amounts in parts of the Tri-State.

The National Weather Service says the snow will be followed by sunny but cold weather through the weekend.

The next precipitation is expected Monday night and Tuesday when temperatures are expected to rise above freezing. Forecasters are predicting rain for Tuesday.
