Former Main St. Exit demolished

John Gibson

What was left of a burned-out nightclub in Evansville has been torn down.

Crews from Klenck Company have demolished the back portion of the former Harpole’s Main Street Exit, at Main and John streets.

Fire destroyed the front part of the building in 2009 when it was known as Woody’s. The rear portion of the building was a prominent eyesore since the fire.

Owner Danny Harpole is paying for the demolition of the 125-year-old building.

He still owns the land, which city officials describe as a valuable property.

The building opened in 1891 as a bakery. It became the Main Street Exit in the 1980’s. Harpole took it over in 1991.

The late pop star Prince visited the nightclub in 1998, after he performed at Roberts Stadium.
