Evansville swimmer Lilly King has won an Olympic gold medal and made waves around the world.
King won the gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke at Rio Monday night, setting an Olympic record with her time – and edging Russian rival Yulia Efimova by more than a half-second.
After her win, the 19-year-old King told NBC that the victory proves the U.S. can “compete clean” – a reference to Efimova’s alleged doping.
The Russian won the silver medal and American Katie Meili (MY-lee) won the bronze.
Up next for King is the 200-meter breaststroke. She’s scheduled to race at about 11:45 Central Time Wednesday morning on NBC.
