Groundbreaking next week for Tropicana move to land

John Gibson

Tropicana Evansville will break ground on its land-based casino next week.

Tropicana is planning a $50 million, 75,000-square-foot entertainment complex on Riverside Drive.

Officials will break ground next Tuesday near the Tropicana hotel. The casino is expected to open in December 2017.

Tropicana General Manager John Chaszar says in a news release the project will provide guests with a “new and vibrant hospitality experience."

The plan also calls for Tropicana to contribute $1 million to move LST 325 from its dock off Waterworks Road to where the riverboat casino currently sits off Riverside.

The Indiana legislature approved a measure last year to allow floating casinos to move onto land within their existing property.

Tropicana Entertainment President and CEO Tony Rodio, Indiana Gaming Commission Director Sara Tait, and Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke are expected to attend next week’s groundbreaking.
