Thousands still waiting for power after Thursday storm

Thousands of Evansville-area residents spent Thursday night without electricity. And some may still be in the dark Friday night.

Vectren reported more than 23,000 customers without power after Thursday afternoon’s thunderstorm that packed winds of up to 70 miles an hour.

Vectren spokeswoman Natalie Hedde tells WNIN that repair crews reduced the number of outages to less than 9,000 by Friday morning.

She says the storm created challenges for repair crews because the damage was widespread in 'pockets."

Hedde says crews will “work continuously until all power is restored."

Thursday's storm knocked down numerous trees, limbs, and power lines in Evansville.

A similar storm hit the Owensboro area Friday morning, knocking out electricity to 7,000 customers. Owensboro Municipal Utilities says crews restored power to all but 2,000 by late Friday morning.
