Crews are jacking-up a portion of the Lloyd Expressway Bridge over Pigeon Creek.
The work follows the discovery of cracks on the eastbound span last weekend, which forced crews to close the right lane.
Jason Tiller of INDOT tells WNIN that the cracks are just “cosmetic.” He says the real problem is the bridge’s bearing pads.
Tiller describes the pads as “shock absorbers” that have slipped over time.
He says jacking up the span is a temporary fix for the bearing pads.
Tiller says engineers will assess the bridge after the fix to determine what needs to be done long-term.
Tiller assures drivers that the bridge is safe.
He says another eastbound lane may close during the current work, which is expected to wrap up this weekend.
Tiller urges drivers to slow down and watch for workers on the bridge, which carries an estimated 80,000 vehicles a day.
