Local authorities are warning of a telephone scam involving jury duty.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says it’s received several reports of phone calls from someone claiming to be a Deputy U.S. Marshall.
The caller claims that someone in the household missed jury duty and a bench warrant has been issued.
The caller tells the victim that the matter can be resolved if they pay a fine with money cards, typically purchased at convenient stores.
A news release from the sheriff’s office says one victim lost $2,000 on Thursday.
Authorities say you should treat anyone who requests money over the phone with “extreme skepticism,” regardless of who the caller claims to represent.
The sheriff’s office says when in doubt, get the caller’s name and hang up. Then, call the business or government agency at a phone number you know is correct.
