Agricultural field fires in western Kentucky are affecting air quality in the Evansville area.
The Evansville EPA says the fires and above-average breezes from the south can impact both the east and west sides of the city.
A news release from the agency says it has reported the issue to the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection, because the fires are outside Evansville’s jurisdiction.
The local EPA did not expect particulate matter averages to rise above the federal 24-hour average, but officials are warning residents about exposure to smoke plumes.
EPA Director Jacob Keating says if you see or smell smoke outside, it may not be a good time for outdoor activities – especially if you suffer from asthma, COPD, or heart disease.
Keating also urges adults to monitor children’s activities during smoky conditions.
