Winnecke says city moving ahead on Regional Cities plans

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke remains hopeful that Southwestern Indiana will receive the full $42 million in Regional Cities money.

The Republican mayor was among representatives of the three winning regions to speak before the House Ways and Means Committee this week, urging legislators to approve the full funding.

The measure has stalled at the Statehouse after the Indiana Economic Development Corporation awarded $42 million each to three regions instead of two.

Winnecke tells WNIN that the four-county Evansville region is moving forward with its plans, and will do so until the General Assembly decides what to do.

It’s not clear if the legislature might spread $84 million among the three regions, strip one of the regions of any funding, or go ahead and allocate $42 million to each of the three.

Among the local projects is a planned renovation of Evansville Regional Airport.
