Crews are replacing gas mains and service lines in the Evansville area. WNIN’s John Gibson reports…

Contract crews working for Vectren have begun replacing nearly eight miles of old gas mains and nearly 900 service lines in Evansville at a cost of nearly $5 million.

Vectren spokesman Brad Ellsworth says in a news release that crews are replacing bare steel and cast iron pipelines to meet federal safety standards.

The new lines will be made mostly of plastic.

Streets affected by the project include First, Second, and Third avenues, W. Florida, W. Louisiana, W. Maryland, W. Missouri, W. Oregon, Harriet, and Iowa streets.

Ellsworth says each pipeline can take weeks to complete. He urges drivers to be cautious in construction zones and advises parents to keep their kids away from the work zones.
