The recount in the Newburgh Town Council election is completed, and Council President Bill Kavanaugh will keep his job.
Friday's recount ended with the same result as Election Night, with Democrat Kavanaugh defeating Libertarian challenger Melinda Mitchell 310-to-304.
Mitchell filed for a recount almost two weeks after the November election. She decided to run after the Newburgh Town Council voted 4-1 in June to rezone land for a Walmart Neighborhood Market.
The Courier and Press reports about 100 Newburgh residents – including Mitchell – spoke against the rezoning several times at plan commission and town council meetings.
Kavanaugh, who has been on the town council for about 30 years, cast one of the four votes in favor of the rezoning.
Beginning in January, the Newburgh Town Council will consist of Kavanaugh, Leanna Hughes, Stacie Krieger, Anne Rust Aurand and Tonya McGuire.
