It’s official. Section 4 of the Interstate 69 extension will open Wednesday.
INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield says the stretch of new highway between Crane and Bloomington will open by the end of the day Wednesday, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Odon, Indiana.
Dignitaries, including Governor Mike Pence and Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, are expected to speak at the event.
Following the ceremony, police will escort attendees for a drive on the new pavement.
The highway will open to the public by the end of the day.
Wingfield tells the Bloomington Herald-Times that officials hope to get barriers out of the way early enough for people who work at Crane and live in the Bloomington area to use I-69 for their commute home.
The section will provide a four-lane, limited access highway between Evansville and Bloomington for the first time.
Work is underway to upgrade the four-lane State Road 37 to interstate standards between Bloomington and Martinsville.
Officials are still working to determine the route for the final leg of the I-69 extension between Martinsville and Indianapolis.
