Winnecke re-elected in landslide

It’s four more years for Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.

Evansville voters re-elected the Republican incumbent by a 62-to-34 percent margin over Democratic challenger Gail Riecken.

Winnecke told a cheering crowd at Tropicana that the election is about more than electing a mayor and city council. He called it a "referendum on positive progress."

Winnecke says he appreciates the support of city residents. He also thanked Riecken for a spirited campaign and for her strong support of Evansville.

Riecken says she doesn't plan to run for re-election to the Indiana House next year.

Republicans also picked up three city council seats, which will trim the Democratic majority to 5-to-4.

In a tight race for City Clerk, Democrat Laura Brown Windhorst topped Republican challenger J.D. Strouth by less than 300 votes.

The Election Office says less than 20,000 voters cast ballots in Evansville. That’s just 20 percent of registered voters, but some say the figure of 97,000 registered voters is likely inflated.

The city’s population is about 120,000.
