More mining jobs disappearing

A Dubois County mining company is eliminating more than 100 jobs.

Huntingburg-based United Minerals says it’s reducing its workforce at all of its facilities, eliminating up to 138 positions.

In a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, United says it’s planning the cutbacks because of a reduction in coal sales and anticipated reduction in the demand for coal.

The layoffs are expected between Dec. 31 and Jan. 13.

The company's operations include offices in Huntingburg and Lynnville; mines in Lynnville, Oakland City, Elberfeld, and Boonville; a dock facility in Newburgh; a river terminal in Evansville; and a wash plant in Lynnville.

The company says all employees have been notified of the pending cutbacks.
