EPD: No problem with law-abiding gun owners taking action

Gun owners have taken action in two recent incidents in Evansville, and a police spokesman says that’s okay.

Last month, a man who was trying to stop two alleged purse snatchers fired his own handgun at a fleeing car outside Eastland Mall, hitting the vehicle more than once.

A 66-year-old woman whose purse had been stolen was briefly dragged by the car, but she didn’t require medical care.

Police arrested both suspects a short time later. The gunman – who had a permit for his weapon -- was not charged. Police say he was within his rights to shoot.

This week, a man fired his own handgun at a group of suspects trying to rob his neighbor above the 7-11 Tavern on Virginia Street. He himself was wounded in an exchange of gunfire, but also is expected to face no charges.

WNIN asked Evansville Police Sgt. Jason Cullum whether private gun owners help in such situations or create more danger.

Cullum said it's not a hindrance to law enforcement, but he urges all gun owners to understand the laws and to make sure they can safely handle a weapon.

Cullum says the department respects 2nd Amendment rights.
