Budget cuts expected to hurt

Cuts to Evansville’s 2016 budget are expected to hit not-for-profits hard.

Many will see a 50-percent reduction in local grants.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke gathered not-for-profit leaders at the Civic Center Tuesday to tell them about the cuts.

He said many of them were "unnecessary." He also said politics got in the way of good public police.

Some Democrats on the city council accuse the Winnecke administration of reckless spending, and say that’s why they had to cut another $1.7 million from the budget.

The council approved the spending plan 8-to-1 Monday night after also eliminating a blight elimination program, making cuts to the Ford Center and Victory Theatre, and trimming public safety overtime pay.
