It’s official. Ground will be broken this Friday for the IU School of Medicine in Downtown Evansville.
A news release from Mayor Winnecke’s office says the event will begin at 10:00 Friday morning on the site at Walnut and 6th Street.
Winnecke will preside over the ceremony, which is expected to be attended by Indiana University President Michael McRobbie, USI President Linda Bennett, and UE’s Dean of Education and Health Sciences Mary Kessler.
Residents are encouraged to attend the groundbreaking, with free parking available at Walnut and 5th Street.
The State Budget Committee released $60 million for the project last week.
The facility will be shared by IU, the University of Southern Indiana, and the University of Evansville.
The facility will also partner with local hospitals.
The Evansville City Council approved a $57 million bond for the campus and related developments.
The med school is expected to open in late 2017 or early 2018.
