Vectren: heating bills may be lower

Your heating bills may be lower this winter.

Vectren is projecting lower natural gas bills, thanks to low and stable gas prices.

The utility's Natalie Hedde tells WNIN that the average customer can expect to pay about $350 over the five-month heating season for natural gas. She says last winter, the average would have been about $440, but colder than normal temperatures raised bills above projections.

Hedde says heating bills vary by customer depending on the size and age of the home, the number of gas appliances, the number of people in the home, thermostat settings, and levels of insulation.

Vectren urges residents to be energy efficient, regardless of gas prices. The utility also offers a “budget bill” that spreads out estimated heating costs over the course of the year. And energy assistance programs are available for low-income residents.
