The two major candidates for Evansville mayor fielded questions Thursday during a joint appearance.
Incumbent Republican Lloyd Winnecke and Democratic challenger Gail Riecken spoke at a forum sponsored by the Southwest Indiana Chamber.
On the issue of downtown development, Winnecke said his administration is working on a master plan to coordinate projects like the IU med school, convention hotel, and a possible land-based casino.
Riecken suggested the city tap into a major downtown resource, the Ohio River. She said the city should develop a commercial port.
On the issue of quality of life, Riecken focused on increasing wages.
Winnecke said his administration has made quality of life improvements, including fitness and neighborhood clean-up programs.
The two candidates will meet again October 6th in debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters. They’ll meet for the final time before the election October 22nd on WNIN 9.1 and WNIN FM.
